Little Big Game - BHS vs San Mateo

Rotary Lunch Meeting, Thursday, Nov. 2nd

CHANGE OF VENUE  to the Lion's Hall, Washington Park, Burlingame

This week we celebrate the local tradition of the Little-Big Game between Burlingame and San Mateo and 2017 at this weeks meeting.

A little history - Kickoff at the historic Little-Big Game between Burlingame and San Mateo is scheduled forSaturday, Nov. 4th at BHS. This annual rivalry game is one of oldest between public schools in the Greater Bay Area. It began in 1927. This year’s game will be the 90th game. Burlingame leads the series. 

Should be a fun meeting - we look forward to your company at the Lion's Hall Washington Park (next to the Parks & Rec Building) - and bring a friend.

Advancement in Blood Cancer Treatments.

Dr. Derek C Galligan, MD, will speak about advancements in blood cancer treatments. 

Dr. Galligan received his B.A. in Biology from Reed College and graduated from Tulane University School of Medicine. He completed a residency at Stanford Hospitals and Clinics and is a Clinical Fellow at UCSF.

Physician Organizations in the Bay Area

Bob Hortop is well known to our Club, having been a member for over twenty years.  He served as an executive with the Sutter Health System for most of that time with a wide variety of responsibilities. After retiring from Sutter in 2013 he was recruited by the Mills Peninsula Medical Group to be their Executive Director. He continues in that role today.

Bob is going to discuss physician organizations in the Bay Area, why physicians choose to join certain organizations, and how insurance companies contract with physicians to create their networks.

Visit to Edogawa, Japan

Using visuals, including video and photography, and humor our four Japanese Exchange Students, Eoghan (Owen),  Kaili, Parker and Jordan will present a vivid, enthusiastic and exciting narrative of their experiences while living with their host family in Edogawa, Tokyo. During their stay they attended high school, learned some Japanese and were generally immersed in the culture. You will hear their personal reflections, what they learned and how they have grown as people because of the opportunity. They can’t wait to share with us the ways in which the trip has changed their lives.

Village Movement

Scott McMullin, of Sequoia Village, will inform us about an innovative grassroots movement that has emerged in the last decade in the organizational field of support services for community-dwelling older adults. Started in 2015 as Sequoia Village, is serving members in Belmont, San Carlos and Redwood City. In 2016 he launched Mid-Peninsula Village to serve the communities of San Mateo, Burlingame, and Hillsborough. The Village movement is one of the most viable options to enable our society cope with the upcoming aging revolution.

History of the San Francisco Airport Author of "Wings of the Phoenix."

Don Shoecraft is a journalist and writer with more than 40 years’ experience writing news, opinion and communications for newspapers, corporate clients, public agencies and nonpro ts. He has been active in the Peninsula community for many years and has served on numerous community boards, including Community Gatepath, the Child Care Coordinating

Council, the San Mateo Police Activities League and several chambers of commerce. He is also past president of the San Mateo Rotary Club. He retired in 2015, then unretired to become founding editor and lead writer for Redwood City’s Climate Magazine, retired again in 2017, then unretired for the most recent time this January to create an association with printers whose services he’d purchased for 25 years. He merged MTK Communications, his company, with Productive Printing and Alpha Press to form Essential Printing Associates, which provides digital and o set printing in addition to resources for clients in many disciplines, from video to advertising to web.

He is author of four o cially commissioned histories, Purple Cow to Purple Qumquat, the centennial history of the San Francisco Boys and Girls Club, Born of Fire, the history of the City of Brisbane, Crossroads Community, the history of the City of San Bruno and Wings of the Phoenix, History of San Francisco International Airport, which is the subject of Wednesday’s presentation.

Presentation by students of the Crowden Music Center in Berkeley, and Cary Koh

Crowden Music Center in Berkeley is a non-profit Arts and Education organization, of which Rotary member, Cary Koh is an alumnus, a former faculty member, and the current Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees.  Crowden’s mission is to combine music and education to nurture, develop, and inspire students of all ages, and provides essential support to the musical life of the community. Mr. Eugene Sor and Cary will talk about their experiences with Crowden Music center and then they will introduce one or two small ensembles who will play a movement from the chamber music repertoire. Cary will also play a short movement (possibly from Vivaldi’s 4 seasons) with the ensembles and then discuss the programmatic aspects of the Vivaldi 4 seasons, and how these ideas are considered and  implemented into a performance.  There will also be a Q&A for the all presenters, young and older.

Consumer Investigative Reporting

This morning's speaker is Chris Chmura, investigative reporter. Chris joined NBC Bay Area in April 2016 as Consumer Investigative Reporter. He responds to consumer complaints and advocates on their behalf. Chris joined NBC Bay Area from WTVT in Tampa, where he spent nearly 10 years as a consumer reporter. His stories offered viewers advice for saving money, avoiding scams and traveling smart and were distributed to stations nationwide. Prior to that Chris worked at WFLA in Tampa, and in Washington D.C. at The Associated Press and Conus TV News Service in both Tallahassee and Washington, D.C.  He began his career at WCJB-TV in Gainesville, Florida as a fill-in weekend weather forecaster.

CAROLE RODONI, President, Bamboo Consulting, provides real estate industry expert consulting to several companies including First American Title Company, Baynet, Vreo, MRL Group Real Estate and CondoServe. She writes a weekly real estate related column for seven Peninsula newspapers and is a guest columnist for the San Francisco Examiner. In her real estate career, she served as President, COO of Alain Pinel Realtor. Inc., Chief Operations Officer, Cornish and Carey Residential Real Estate, Inc  President, COO Fox and Carskadon Residential Real Estate. Carole participates in a regular real estate television series on cable, she is a regular guest on many radio talk shows, she is a guest columnist for among others the Wall Street Journal and she writes her own newsletter.
