On election eve, we gathered at ye olde Hilton for fun, fellowship, and a great newscast, followed by another great program.  Shout out to the Program Committee yet again!

PLEDGE AND INVOCATION
Maki Kobayashi led us in the pledge, and Pastor Paul Watermulder delivered an invocation.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests

Cheryl Fama introduced the vaguely familiar Ricardo Ortiz who was introduced as the Vice Mayor of Burlingame.  President Stan had seen Ricardo’s picture in the San Mateo Daily Journal debating the pros and cons of rent control, Burlingame Measure R.  Seeing the writing on the wall, Ricardo joined Stan’s President’s Club.  Too much time in the limelight is going to cost you.

Ricardo Ortiz introduced his guest Doug Winnett of Andreini & Co. Insurance, San Mateo.  Rosalie McCloud introduced guest Cheri De Lacy Carr, owner of MorrisonTravel, San Mateo.  Also introduced was Paul Belzer, principal of Burlingame High School
Guests also included Renee Navarro of the Burlingame Chamber of Commerce and today’s speaker Dr. Ken Montgomery, Executive Director of Designtech High School.
Father Mike Mahoney announced an event in support of 4,000 children orphaned by AIDS.  The lobster feast will be held at Our Lady of Angels Hall at 6:00P on November 19.   Lobsters courtesy of Burlingame’s own New England Lobster Market and Eatery on Cowan Road.  Cost is $90.00 for an excellent cause and great lobster!
Mike Heffernan was selling squares in the World Series Pool.  Some hot spots remained open.  Winners to be announced at a later date.  Winners in addition to the Cubbies, that is!!!!
President Stan reminded to mark your calendar for next Thursday, November 17,  when we will kick off the holiday season with the Fun Fairies, 6:00 P.M. at the lovely home of our own Suzanne Juptner  at 428 Occidental Avenue, San Mateo.
To review the 2016 election, our speaker on November 14 will be John Rothman of KGO Radio.  The meeting will be at Poplar Creek Golf Course where there is great parking, great food, green lawns. Yes!

New Members
Inducted and receiving round badges today were Doug Winnett, Cheri De Lacy Carr, and Paul Belzer. Cary Koh received his square badge and was commended for his contributions and participation in the Golf  Scholarship Committee and for being a speaker at a recent Club lunch progam.  What a wonderful example he sets for all as a great Rotarian. CONGRATULATIONS ROTARIANS!

Newscast

Newscaster Cheryl Fama updated: Giants made the playoffs, Cubs won the Series, Kap donned a helmet to contain his coif, the Warriors are adjusting. The Niners are rethinking things. Big Winners this week were the Burlingame Panthers who won the Little Big Game last Saturday 48 to 13!!!  CONGRATULATIONS, GUYS!!!
Cheryl says wine plus dinner = winner. I’ll drink to that.
In the spirit of the election, the word “politics” has as its roots “poly” and “tics” – blood-sucking parasites!
There was sooooooooo much more.    Good fun, Cheryl!

Program

Renee Navarro administers Membership Services for the Burlingame Chamber of Commerce and is the mother of a junior at Design Tech High School in Burlingame, as well as a founding mother.  When seeking a high school for her son, Renee was advised by Bob Doerr and Dennis Zell that Design Tech was the place for her son.  They were correct.

Renee introduced Dr. Ken Montgomery, Executive Director of Design Tech High School located here in Burlingame at 1800 Rollins Road (www.dtechhs.org), surrounded by Sees Candies, Guittard Chocolate, and ItsIt across the freeway.  Sweetly situated.
In January 2018, Design Tech will be relocating to its fabulous, brand-new school on the Oracle Campus at Redwood Shores.  It is a free, public high School, temporarily located in the San Mateo County Office of Education Building in Burlingame.
Oracle is providing the land and construction of the building on its campus; otherwise, the school is autonomous   Extreme personalization is emphasized along with putting knowledge into action.
The Design Tech model is guided by two principles:  design thinking guided by the design school at Stanford University and personalizing the student experience.
The world is going to change drastically and quickly. This truth became evident when the IBM Watson Computer beat the top Jeopardy contestants.
Design Tech asks students to empathize, define, ideate.
The human way of solving problems must be incorporated.
Major corporations provide training to students in the Intersession program.  Participates include: Bon Appetit, Wells Fargo, Bay Area Lyme Foundation, and many others.  Oracle is the deepest partner, instructing in coding and electrical engineering.  There is a wearable technology workshop – for girls only!
Oracle really believed in the Intersession classes program and said “What do you need?”  We need a home.  Oracle owned land at its campus in Redwood Shores and agreed to build a school.  The students signed a steel beam today.  Plans call for a 75-foot width and 450-foot length for the school.
The only attendance requirement is that the student be a California resident.
Acceptance is by lottery.  A student in the San Mateo High School District gets five lottery chances, four chances for a student in the Sequoia School District.  Twenty-one percent (21%) of students qualify for free lunches.  No football, but athletics include soccer, basketball, sailing, and volley ball.
Thanks so much, Renee and Dr. Montgomery, for your work and your visit.

Next Week:     Meeting is at Poplar Creek Golf Course
Program: John Rothman – Election Results
