It’s been an unhappy weekend, so it was grounding to see Rotary members and to welcome pre-eminent land use planner Prakash Pinto....

PLEDGE AND INVOCATION

Duffy Offield welcomed us at the greeting table and short-timer President  Barry called the meeting to order at the appointed time. The Pledge was led by presumptive  President Elect Mike Horwitz who will be our leader as of July 2017.
The Invocation was spoken by Rosalie McCloud.   It was pretty  basic since it came out of Google “Secular Invocations.”   Must admit, wasn’t much in the mood for towering themes as I prepared.

No guests or visiting Rotarians.  It was nice to see Doug McGeorge who has been off gallivanting.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

On Monday the 27th, we celebrate the debunking of President Barry. This is a cerebral and sophisticated ceremony lamenting the passing into history of our beloved leader. Wailing is encouraged.  Immediately, our new leader Stan Moore will be anointed and move to Make Rotary Great Again!

Wednesday June 15, the Board Meeting  will be held in the Tournament Room, Poplar Creek from 4:30 to 7:00.

SPEAKER INTRODUCTION

Our very own Cheryl Fama is CEO of the Peninsula Health Care District which oversees lands and development for the benefit of the District.   The district has funded a broad range of health care needs by investing in several important initiatives:

  • The Trousdale, coming to Burlingame in 2018. The Trousdale is an assisted living and memory care facility owned by PHCD and operated by Eskaton.
  • Apple Tree Dental – an innovative dental care model that removes barriers to access for the elderly and special needs adults
  • Healthy Schools Initiative – A three-year program serving the health and wellness needs of 20,000 K-8 grade school children.
  • Peninsula Wellness Community – eight acres of PHCD-owned land being developed
  • Annual Community Grants Program – PHCD has invested more than $30 million since the Community Grants Program began in 1996.

SPEAKER

Cheryl introduced Prakash Pinto who is designing and bringing to reality the Peninsula Wellness Community described above.  Prakash Pinto is the pre-eminent land use planner in the world.  Recently he has spent many years working at Mission Bay.  He enjoys high enthusiasm for good, public benefit projects.   The goal is that every resident can achieve optimum health. The western facing portion of the development will be devoted to 200-300 housing units.   Community Gatepath will operate a pre-school which will be integrated into the community.   Therapeutic gardens are planned, and there will also be a meditation garden.  Prakash says good quality design is not just for the rich

The cost to develop is $300 - $500 million with a completion date sometime in the next five to 15 years. Prakash started  working at Mission Bay when he was 24 years old, and says he is now 51.
