Call to Order: Past-president Marilyn Orr filled in for President Joe La Mariana who was somewhere addressing the Fraternal Order of Garbage Collectors….maybe I got that wrong. Something like that.
Pledge of Allegiance: Jay Miller, with his flag collection in hand, led us all in the pledge.
Invocation: Charles Voltz offered a do-it-yourself thought as a lovely Irish blessing was shared onscreen for all to read.
Visitors: Mike Heffernan introduced two visitors. Jonathan Dhyne is College and Financial Aid Advisor at BHS and Lara Beacon, a Rotary scholarship awardee.
Announcements:
- Fun Fairies – Suzanne Juptner reminded us all of the event at her home on Thursday, November 18th. It’s a wonderful opportunity to finally get together, in-person, with your fellow Rotarians and others.
- Holiday Party – Get your RSVPs into Cheryl Fama for our holiday lunch at Sapore Italiano on Wednesday, December 15th.
- Rotary Foundation Annual Campaign – There is still time to get your EREY (Every Rotarian Every Year) donation check to Bill Tiedeman. Mail it with your raffle tickets (one for every $20 contributed) to Bill. Remember, almost half of our Club’s donations come back to us to apply to an international project of our choosing.
Student Guest:
Mike Heffernan again introduced
Lara Beacon, a senior at UC Santa Barbara. Lara was the recipient of four, consecutive Rotary scholarships. Lara attended Community College of San Mateo for two years. Upon receiving her AA degree, she was accepted to multiple 4-year schools and chose UC Santa Barbara. Our club’s MAD scholarship program again assisted this exceptional student with tuition help in both of her 2 final years at UCSB. Lara described her journey, struggles and ultimate success through BHS, to CSM to UC Santa Barbara. Her presentation was very inspiring and compelling so please watch it on the Zoom recording of the meeting.
Breakout Session: We had time for one. Fun as always.
Newscast +: For the sake of time so that our speaker could begin, Jennifer Pence agreed to defer the Newscast until next week.
Program:
Fritz Brauner introduced our speaker,
Harmony Ma. Harmony is the program manager of Action Leadership Program with Students, a leadership program for high schoolers piloted and funded by the Rotary Club of San Francisco. ALPS provides youth a platform to bring their community change ideas to life! Through youth-generated service projects and leadership coaching from trained adults, these high schoolers experience hands-on leadership, build communication and problem-solving skills, and create a positive impact in an area of their interest. Harmony showed us many examples of successful projects that these students, from numerous Bay Area high schools, have completed. Her presentation demonstrated the power of engaging youth and letting them create and lead various initiatives.
Please, again, watch the Zoom recording to see her PowerPoint display to get the full impact of this Rotary-inspired program.
Closing: To recognize the presentation today Burlingame Rotary will be donating 5 polio vaccinations through Rotary’s End Polio Now program.
