President Phil Siegle got the party started by asking Jerry Winges to lead our Pledge of Allegiance. Bob Doerr then shared a dash of Rotary history regarding the history of the 4-way test and how it found its way into our core guiding principles. Ted Kruttschnitt celebrated learning this essential knowledge by waking up. Mark Johnson then shared a fun idea for us all to take a group picture for our dear friend Annabelle Emery who’s on the cusp of her 100th birthday. We love ya Annabelle!
There were no visiting Rotarians today, but our guests included a wonderfully poised Burlingame Rotary Scholar, 2022 BHS grad Rebecca Bedolla. After earning not one, not two but THREE associate degrees from College of San Mateo. As a result, this impressive young lady punched her ticket to UCLA to finish her collegiate studies. She also survived a series of wacky, comedic A/V failures during her presentation. I don’t care just how many times Alex Buljan messed with her microphone and PPT screen she stated on right on point. Grace under pressure…well done Rebecca.
Other guests included Hillsborough Town Member Leslie Ragsdale and Hillsborough Town Council Member candidate Laurie Davies Adams.
.
Past President Marilyn Orr made a passionate pitch to fill out our Burlingame on the Avenue (August 17th and 18th) beverage booth sign up schedule…remember all tips earned on our watch go right to community project fund! She also noted that our upcoming 13th Annual Golf Tournament on September 30th will be held at Millbrae’s magnificent Green Hills Country Club (which is our biggest fundraiser of the year!) is still seeking sponsors. The money earned here fuels most of our biggest community projects and scholarships. Can’t think of a more worthy reason to get involved. Hillsborough’s Mayor and our favorite theatrical performer, Christine Krolik, asked us to save the date for our club’s amazing 100th Anniversary party on January 30th at the fabulous Kohl mansion. You do NOT want to miss this event!
Program:
Welcome to Heavenly Hillsborough
City Manager (and former HPD Chief) Doug Davis gave a rousing overview of this lovely hamlet’s current initiatives. The City Council has identified five key priorities including:
Wireless for all
Fire Suppression measures
Expanding the Neighborhood Network
Power outage prevention and back up
All age inclusion action plan
Doug also discussed the Town’s Housing plan options, road resurfacing, a major water capture project and promoting crime stats. Pretty impressive body of work established by the esteemed elected officials and faithfully implemented by their committed city staff. All of these projects add up to a wonderful quality of life amongst the tree-filled hills that we all know and love.
Our spirited Rotarians the peppered Doug with a barrage of questions that he handled with aplomb…A job well-done Doug!
Police Interrogation, False Confessions and the Wrongful Conviction of the Innocent. Professor Leo will discuss how police interrogation works (their techniques, strategies and practices), how and why it can be psychologically coercive and lead to false and reliable confessions, and how and why false confessions can lead to the wrongful conviction and incarceration of the innocent.
