High Gear -  June 21 2017

Pledge and Invocation

The fog rolled in last night, so today was fabuloso in a more temperate way. We felt fire and brimstone last week, but all is lovely again today. President Stan called the meeting to order eventually; we were heavy on fellowship today.

Jerry Winges delivered the Rotary Peace Invocation: We believe conflict is inevitable, but so is peace. We believe Rotarians are able to provide relief. We believe there can be a resolution; as each one of us makes our own contribution, we can help conflict cease.

Guests and Visiting Rotarians

Our guest and speaker for the day is Linda Shively whose business card reads Be Grateful, Be Happy Live Joyfully! No visiting Rotarians. Something we said?

Announcements

Pierre Bouquet noticed that the Welcome to Burlingame sign at Burlingame Plaza listed Monday as our meeting day. Thanks to Pierre for causing the change to Wednesday, and funding the correction as well.
Alert! The end is near. Next Wednesday, June 28, is the annual debunking where we say “take a break” to our tired, used-up President and roll out a fresh new one. But, we digress. Next week will be all about lauding the numerous accomplishments of His Worship and honoring him with a small production reflecting his Presidential Year. Congratulations Nancy Bush on your spiffy new square badge!
This being President Stan’s last meeting from the podium, he graciously acknowledged his Board.

  • Mike Horwitz, who makes work for Mike Heffernan
  • Marilyn Orr who is Treasurer and functions as  Sales Center Manager
  • Marc Friedman, President Elect-Elect, for his work with Safe Harbor
  • Karen Malekos-Smith for her all-around assistance with the golf event
  • Mark Johnson, Historian, whose assistance is regularly sought
  • Charlie Rosebrook for producing the barbecue at the golf dinner so efficiently and yummily
  • Lisa Goldman for the endless details she handles for the Club.
  • John Delaney for his work with Marilyn Orr and all things financial

  • Mary Murphy and Rosalie McCloud were acknowledged for producing the High Gear

Program

Nancy Bush introduced our speaker, Linda Shively. Linda recommends that we laugh our troubles away. We all have worries and stress whether in our personal, professional, or community lives. Linda Shively teaches us to be aware of the pitfalls of staying stuck in worry and to lighten our loads, reduce stress, and have fun. Linda holds a B.S. in psychobiology from UCLA and certification as a Neuro-Linguistic Programming(NLP) practitioner. Linda has spent years studying how the brain and mind function. As a Certified Laughter Yoga leader, Linda shares the power of full-bodied laughter to promote physical and emotional health and well-being, especially for those who are grieving.

Linda shared that she had experienced the loss of her four-year-old-daughter who was diagnosed at birth with a condition that would take the child’s life in a few short years. Going forward, one can choose to be happy:  one will never forget, but it is not necessary to live in that dark space. Over time, Linda has supported over 300 families who have experienced devastating loss. If stuck in a dark place, get help!  Be in a community.  Often someone will appear with whom one can make a connection. Dolphins will nudge each other to help bring another Dolphin back to the world after a loss. Breathing is critical. How efficiently do we breathe? We tried deep breathing, then Linda suggested we laugh.  Laughing  is all about breathing. The Rotarians laughed and laughed. We could notice our uplift in spirit. Thanks for exposing us to the magic of deep breathing and laughter, Linda. LindaBeGrateful@gmail.com We will be donating a book in your name to the Burlingame Library.
