Pledge of Allegiance:  Peter Comaroto (Mr. Olive Oil) lead the pledge.

Thought for the Day:   William Li  showed slides of all his weird friends he has in Japan.  They look strikingly similar to cartoon characters and are in fact mascots for various businesses, cities and promotions.  He praised the idea of student exchange programs  and cross-cultural experiences.  We are so lucky to live in the unique multi-cultural Bay Area community where we can all learn from and appreciate other faiths, races and cultural differences.

Visitors:  Holy Moly!!  We had a record turnout of 34 at lunch, including 9 visitors!  It must have been the Bento boxes that dragged everyone out of their houses -- no, no, it was the wonderful program about our student exchanges and a chance to meet and hear from those students!

Marc Friedman introduced the 4 adults:  Carrie Hermann from BHS, Cara Kronen, Sreelata Suresh and Marc’s wife Madelyn, and introduced the 5 students:  Shastha Suresh who is going to Italy, and Victoria Ferrero here from Italy, and the three BHS students who went to Japan—Noah Robinson, Abby Gorin, and Brendan Gilmore.

Announcements:
  1. President Doug is trying to firm up dates for the Fireside Chat for new members. Please respond to the emails sent to new members with suggested dates so that this can be finalized.
  2. Burlingame on the Avenue is happening on Saturday and Sunday, August 16 and 17. Rotarian volunteers are needed to help at the beer tents, so please contact Marilyn Orr to sign up if you can for a half-day shift.  It is a lot of fun!  All tips received will go to our Rotary Service Fund – and there is no tax on tips!
  3. Doug sent out a flyer by email regarding the Peninsula Health Fair happening this Saturday. If you are interested in volunteering this is a great community service activity.
  4. Our District 5150 is offering a leadership course to be held at the SSF Rotary Terrace on 3 Saturdays:  September 20 and 27, and October 4.  These 3 all day sessions, titled “Servant Leadership” are the latest ideas for anyone interested in improving their leadership skills in any area of life.  The course costs $150 for the 3-day series.  Contact Doug or the Rotary District websites for more information.

Program:     Marc called on each of the students to give a presentation.
Shastha Suresh introduced himself.  He graduated from Aragon High School and will be leaving in 3 weeks for a student exchange to a town north of Milan, Italy for 10 months.  He will be returning next year to attend UC Davis.
Victoria Ferrero is our exchange student coming from Bra, Italy, famous for cheese and sausages.  She introduced herself and shared details about her life in Italy.  She graced us with pictures of her extended family, her town, school, and fellow students and friends.  She discussed her love for traveling and her experiences in the United States. She is 16 and excels in Skiing and Golf—she holds a 13.4 handicap! (Weeping in the audience among the golfers was evident--)
Japanese Cultural Immersion Experience:
Noah, Abbey and Brendan shared experiences from their recent trip to Japan and the families that hosted them.  They participated in traditional activities like the Karuto game, attending a fire ceremony at a temple, and taking part in cooking classes where they made desserts. They also described a special day involving a visit to a Buddhist temple, a meeting with the Mayor of Edogawa, and a carriage ride through Tokyo, during which they were dressed in traditional kimonos and experienced various cultural rituals. The students explained that the process of dressing in kimonos took longer for girls due to the complexity of the garments and the time required for hair styling.

Their impressions of Japan culture and the differences with the USA included Japan’s stricter public behavior norms, intense work environments, and a unique school system where teachers move between classrooms. They were also impressed with Japan's efficient public transportation systems, cleanliness, and respect for shared spaces.  They would like to see these adopted in American culture.

The conversation ended with an announcement about upcoming youth exchange programs.  Marc is encouraging club members to get involved in hosting and welcoming the Japan students who will visit us next March.

Many thanks to Carrie Hermann for her help in organizing the student trips.  And a special thanks to Marc Friedman in organizing a wonderful meeting and for all he does to support the student exchange program.
