High Gear Bulletin

Zoom Meeting - Wednesday, September 22, 2021

High Gear Editor: Lisa Goldman

President Joe LaMariana called the meeting to order at 12:15.
This Week: former member Phillip Larson led the Pledge of Allegiance. Pete Wanger gave a PowerPoint invocation:
The best thing in life are not THINGS.
The most important things in life are having experiences that build happy, lasting memories.
And sharing those experiences with someone you care about makes them twice as rich.
Inverse Corollary:
Sharing a tragedy with someone who cares about you makes it half as sad.
And finally...
That’s how Pete feels about his friends in Burlingame Rotary.  Well done Pete!
Guests of the club:  Today’s guests included our speaker Rod De La Rosa, a friend of past President Emily Matthews’. Emily met Rod at her first paddling race many years ago. Rod’s friend Raj Mathur was also on the Zoom to share presentation duties. Former member Phillip Larson also joined us.
Sunshine Report:  Cheri Carr is home recuperating. President Joe dropped off some flowers from the club.
Breakout Rooms:  Marilyn Orr sent us out to breakout rooms for a few minutes of fellowship.
Club Announcements:  President Joe let us know that there are some District events coming up. On Oct. 3, there is a Truffle Shuffle to End Polio Now online cooking class/fundraiser featuring chefs who have all cooked at the French Laundry. The District blood drive is still on, through October 1.  There are also a number of PRLS training opportunities. Check out the District website for registration and more information about the various events and trainings.
Golf Committee Update:  Mike Horowitz let us know that we have over 70 golfers signed up.  There will be beer and water on the course, flaming dogs at two different locations, and Jim Shypertt taking pictures.  There are also a number of auction items. Marilyn presented information on sponsorships and the raffle. Thirteen Rotarians have sponsored the tournament, and two others are in the process of sponsoring.  Ten Rotarians have stepped up with raffle items and/or donations to purchase raffle items. We still need to beef up the raffle, so please donate! President Joe said that Green Hills is excited to host the tournament.
Past President Emily announced that the high school district is desperately looking for substitute teachers.
President Joe asked for additional people to sign up as High Gear writers.  Contact Marilyn to sign up.
Bob Doerr gave an update on the international project, which involves creating a tech classroom at a school in India. Bob, Bobba Venkatadri, and Frances Boscacci are working on the project.  Bobba is working on submitting a grant application to Rotary.
After the announcements, Marilyn sent us back into breakout rooms, then Fritz Brauner reminded us that today is the autumnal equinox. Bye bye summer.
Program: Past President Emily introduced today’s speaker, Rod De La Rosa.  Rod is the Vice President of the California Wireless Association, responsible for helping wireless grow. He works for T Mobile and also teaches at Cal State East Bay. Rod introduced his friend Raj Mathur, who works for Hammett and Edison, a consulting engineering firm in Sonoma. The firm’s founder Bob Hammett was a member of Burlingame Rotary many years ago. His son Bill Hammett was also a member of Burlingame Rotary.
Raj and Rod gave a presentation on 5G, the latest technology for encoding data onto radio waves.  (6G is also in development, anticipated to arrive in 5-10 years.) 5G has faster speeds, lower latency, and more capacity than 4G. 5G will be transformative—making our lives better, our communities safer, and our nation more prosperous. It will unlock experiences of the future like driverless cars, Virtual Reality, connected healthcare (i.e., telehealth, remote patient monitoring, and even 5G-enabled remote surgery support), smart cities, and smart power grids. It will also drive investment, create jobs, and spur growth.
President Joe closed out the meeting at 1:30 after thanking our presenters.
