The Virtual Debunking of Chèri DeLacy Carr

President Chèri called the meeting to order.  She had Mary Murphy “fly” the colors.  She asked us to stand and requested that Paul Nieberding lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance.  There was a capacity crowd of 42 on this Zoom call.

Chèri then delivered some moving words on Gratitude.  She thanked numerous members of the Club for their activities and service during her year.  John Delaney was mentioned for his help with Burlingame on the AvenueMike Horwitz and Cary Koh shepherded the Club to a very successful Annual Golf Tournament.  Our Community Service chairs, Sheryl Young and Cheryl Fama, were lauded for their efforts with the goodie bags for Sonrisas and the Community Giving Jars. Kudos to Chuck Voltz and Cheryl Fama for establishing the Memory Café. Sheryl spearheaded a fundraising effort that netted $4600 to support our Par 3 staff members.   Chèri gave a shout out to Treasurer Mike Heffernan for managing our finances and Jennifer Pence, Marc Friedman and Maki Kobayashi who ran our various student exchange programs.  Nancy Bush received recognition for all here efforts maintaining our website.  There were many more Rotarians mentioned as our Club has numerous, very involved members.

There were a number of guests who tuned in for the roasting of our outgoing president.  Chèri introduced her parents, Tom and Diane DelacyJill and Preeti from Morrison Travel were watching on the office big screen.  And, of course, Cheri’s husband, Mike Carr, wouldn’t have missed this review.

President Chèri then called on debunking chair Mark Johnson to “let the show begin”.  Mark then introduced Jerry Winges who began the program, A Year to Forget Remember.

With an array of photographs, Jerry gave a humorous chronicle of Chèri’s life.  She moved around quite a bit as a child but there we few pictures from those early years.  But Jerry was able to relate the story of a rescued gopher with some very funny images.  Most of the photos showed Chèri’s penchant for varying hair styles and colors. They also recounted her many travel escapades throughout the world.

Chèri and Mike Carr were married in 1988.  They then had a son, Austin.  He attended Whittier College and then pursued a career in comedy.  That turned out to be successful as he has appeared at San Francisco’s Comedy Club.

The family then moved into the Burlingame home on Elm of Dave and Jane Carr, helping to care for Dave.  It is still a multi-generational household.  Some refer to it as The Nightmare on Elm Street.

Thanks to Mike Carr we were able to enjoy (but not partake) in the traditional silly string attack.  He also presented Chèri with the plaque and her past-president’s pin.

The cleverness and fun contained in this virtual debunking cannot adequately be described in this newsletter, so I strongly suggest that you watch it for yourself. The link is below.
