As President Phil savored his delicious lunch hosted by Sapore Italiano Ristorante, Club Secretary Marilyn Orr began the meeting. Our distinguished Chamber CEO, Susan Baker, lead the pledge.
Past President Bob Doerr then did what Bob does best—he shared inspiring thoughts on the Rotary mantra “Service Above Self”, he shared a Polio Plus video that showed women who had their nails painted to confirm their participation in Rotary’s international anti-Polio dosing project, and he gave a pitch for the Rotary International Foundation event being held on the historic U.S.S. Hornet during San Francisco’s proud Fleet Week. The man bleeds Rotary blue!
Club Announcements:
Stop the presses because Marilyn announced some mighty big news on the 100th Anniversary Gala front---our registration and ticket purchasing link is now live on our club website. Buy your tickets NOW and help the talented, hardworking and severely underpaid planning committee members (read volunteers!!) properly plan the event. Just go to your computer, pull out your mouse (relax Professor Kimbel, it’s a euphemism) and click. See Ted, that wasn’t so hard, was it?
Club MVP Jennifer Pence announced our Annual Halloween Costume contest at our October 30th lunch meeting. This is the one where those of us who don’t have the courage to dress up and parade on stage get to cheer on those who do. Past President Cary Koh is rumored to be coming as a Stradivarius violin with a Hillbilly bow. He’s covering all his bases.
Burlingame Chamber CEO Susan Baker then presented President Phil and our club with a beefy check for $2,750 that we earned while keeping our fellow community members properly hydrated during the recent fab Burlingame on the Avenue event. These funds go straight to our scholarship fund so stay thirsty my friends.
And lastly, Past President Cary Koh briefly reported that the Golf Tournament was a success. He expects to have final net numbers to report in the future.
Newscast: Puttin’ on the Fritz
In the “News You can Use” category, Fritz wanted to know where you were born. Turns out that Bobba was born really, really far away. Solid work Fritz.
Program:
Discovery of New Meds while using AI and Quantum Tech
Our very own Pharma VC and all-around great guy, Bobba Venkatadri, gave a verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry comprehensive introduction for our esteemed speaker, Dr. Desiree Thayer. Dr. Thayer explained why it takes 10+ years, millions of dollars and jumping through a whole lotta hoops to bring a new medicine to market. Extensive clinical studies. Plenty of FDA oversight. Buckets of money. Many buckets of money…. The use of AI accelerates this process and that’s a good thing. As usual, our fellow Rotarians asked thoughtful and probing questions and Dr. Thayer answered them all in clear, easy to understand everyday language. Her communication skills and scientific brilliance were appreciated by all.
Please see the video for more information on this impressive successful Rotary project
President Phil then finished his cannoli and awarded Dr. Thayer a certificate for five Polio vaccinations in her name and he adjourned the meeting.
