Zoom Meeting - Wednesday, October 13, 2021

High Gear Editor: Editor-less

With the absence of President Joe La Mariana, who was apparently playing in the wine country, Past-President Emily Matthews reprised her role and ably hosted the Zoom meeting.

Pledge of Allegiance: Emily then asked Bob Doerr to lead us in the pledge. He produced a flag and we all followed along…sort of.

Jennifer Pence gave the invocation, citing thoughtful words form people representing three religions. As she noted, all were resonant regardless of one’s religious affiliation. She, helpfully, provided the text.

Make us worthy, Lord, to serve our fellow men
throughout the world who live and die in poverty and hunger.
Give them through our hands this day their daily bread,
and by our understanding love, give peace and joy.  Mother Teresa

Praise be to the Lord of the Universe who has created us and made us into tribes and nations, that we may know each other, not that we may despise each other…...  Most Gracious are those who walk on the Earth in humility, and when we address them, we say “PEACE.” Muslim Prayer

May we be a protector to those without protection, a leader for those who journey, and a boat, a bridge, a passage for those desiring the other shore. Buddhist Prayer

Announcements:
Marilyn Orr gave a quick update on the golf tournament. We had 93 golfers. Mike Matteucci reported that his foursome had a great time, in spite of the wind and the cold. Everyone loved the sliders and hot dogs that Flamin' Dog served. Thanks to the front table helpers; Chris Ramirez, Christine Krolik, Marilyn Orr, and San Mateo Rotarian Michelle Privitera.

Bill Tiedeman reminded everyone to make their Rotary Foundation annual donation by either mailing him their check or going to www.rotary.org if you want to make a credit card donation. You will need to register for My Rotary on the site initially.

Newscast +
In honor of today’s speaker, Fritz and Jennifer did a circus-themed Newscast+. We voted on what roles Mark Johnson and Mark Lucchesi would have had if they’d been in the circus. Choices were:
  • Clown
  • Ring Master
  • Lion Tamer
  • Trapeze Artist

Most voted that Mark J. would have been a ring master with close second as a lion tamer. Roles were swapped for Mark L. who most thought would be a lion tamer with ring master as runner up—Fritz brought up vivid image of Mark beating back clients in Mollie Stones.

We had a couple of breakout rooms before the program.

Program
The program was kicked off with a video about the Zoppé Family Circus and followed by an engaging Q&A with the current head and sixth-generation member of the troupe—Giovanni Zoppé. You can check out the program and the rest of the meeting here.

Many Rotarians asked about where to get tickets. The Zoppé Family Circus will be in Redwood City through the weekend after Thanksgiving. Tickets are available through the City of Redwood City’s event page.
