Due to the writers’ strike this and future High Gears will be somewhat abbreviated.
Cary Koh began his second meeting of his Rotary Year by asking Ted Kruttschnitt to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. And Ted remembered all the words! Scott Campbell came forward to deliver the Invocation on Volunteering.
The next order of business was to welcome a new member. Rachel Ni was a former member of our Club. She then joined the Belmont-Redwood Shores Club. Once we resumed in-person meeting, she saw the light and returned to the fold. Welcome back, Rachel.
President Cary was unable to continue with his agenda as Ted Kruttschnitt ascended the stage with an item wrapped in newsprint which he presented to Cary. He was pleased to receive Ted’s gift of a stepping stool and put it to good use immediately.
President Cary then invited Mark Lucchesi to the podium. Mark then recognized Rotarians who had July birthdays.
President Cary introduced “Getting to Know You” version two. This one featured Jennifer Pence. Following along with his musical theme he asked if we knew from which musical the title originated. To help us out, Christine Krolik sang a few stanzas of this tune from The King and I. We learned that Jennifer’s go-to alcoholic beverage is white wine and black tea is her source of caffeine. Among her many past jobs, she never worked as a Baskin Robbins cake decorator.
Bobba Venkatadri took the stage to introduce our speaker, Roland Greene PhD of Stanford University. Stanford University houses the leading university-based humanities center in the United States, a place for research and reflection. Dr. Greene, as director of the center, discussed its impact on the quality of life in the area.
