Zoom Meeting - Wednesday, October 5, 2022

High Gear Editor: Marilyn Orr

As we gathered for our first meeting in our new meeting venue, the spectacular Burlingame Community Center, we were greeted with a celebratory glass of champagne, graciously provided and served by Ted Kruttschnitt.

Pledge of Allegiance: After acknowledging and thanking Ted for his generosity, President Fritz then asked him to lead us in the pledge. Our flag was a virtual representation on the “big” screen thanks to Chris Ramirez.

Invocation: Bob Doerr memorialized our return to a Burlingame meeting location with a quote from Winnie the Pooh, “Today is my favorite day.”

Sunshine Report: Bob then informed us that Rotarian Frances Boscacci just had open-heart surgery. It was successful and she is doing well. A card was then circulated so we could wish her well.

Visiting Rotarians: Konrad Milde of the Rotary Club of Dubai presented the Club with a flag and gave us a bit of information on him and his Club. He is Swiss but is a pilot for Emirates Airline. As Dubai Club Youth Chair he oversees their Interact and Rotaract Clubs.

Guests of the Club: Former member Joe Galligan introduced Scott Campbell for his second visit. Scott is a CPA with Joe’s firm, Galligan, Thompson & Flocas. And he will soon to be a new father.

Guests: There were quite a few guests. Doug Person introduced two guests in addition to the speaker. He brought along friends Ken and Andrew. We also had former member Phillip Larson and his wife Patricia.

Announcements: President Fritz recognized the donation of $1250 that we received from the Burlingame Chamber of Commerce as a result of tips collected during the two days of Burlingame on the Avenue. He, again, thanked the volunteers who worked the event. A full golf Tournament update was deferred to a future meeting.

Dennis Zell stood and thanked Fritz for his 40 minutes of announcements stating that this is why he comes to meetings. He also was appreciative for Fritz filling in for the “real” president. He asked if that individual would be here next week. Fritz did take this hazing as a opportunity to note that he would need a substitute for the first two weeks of November. He asked Dennis which date worked best for him. Dennis said that unfortunately he was in trial on both of those dates.

Fritz recognized Paul Watermulder, a former Berkeley police officer since it was National Coffee with a Cop Day. When Paul left the force, he thought he would make his fortune with the invention of the three-doughnut holster. It was not to be.

Program: Doug Person introduced our speaker, Tripp Mickle. Tripp is a New York Times reporter covering the tech industry. He has written a book telling the inside story of Apple after the passing of Steve Jobs. For his fascinating presentation watch the Zoom recording.

Adjournment: Before closing the meeting, Fritz recognized our fabulous caterers, Sarah Marotta and her brother Jacob, owners of Kiki’s Coffee Shop.
