Incoming President Doug Person kicked off the June 11 meeting with a spirited recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Invocation was led by Christine Krolik, who recognized June as Pride Month, and she spoke on the irony of the Southern Baptist Convention voting overwhelmingly to condemn gay marriage during Pride Month.  Christine related her personal experience raising a gay son and how he originally felt that being gay was a burden, but who ultimately came to feel it was a gift.

Rabbi Jay Miller introduced the monthly Rotary Magazine, highlighting the theme of Rotary as a "future legacy maker" and mentioning the winning photos from the annual Rotary contest. He also discussed a story about community re-terracing in Rwanda and encouraged members to read the entire issue.

Jennifer Pence introduced Sierra Elman, the youth Poet Laureate of Burlingame, who read the poem she had composed for our Rotary Club 100th Anniversary Gala. She reflected on her experience as Poet Laureate, particularly enjoying running poetry workshops for young people at the Burlingame Library. Thank you. Sierra, for your brilliant composition.

Marilyn Orr then introduced Anjali Bobba, granddaughter of Rotarian Bobba Venkatadri. Thanks to the generosity of Anjali and her employer, Johnson & Johnson, our international projects in India have been extremely successful. She spoke about J&J’s commitment to the education of girls in underserved communities.

Margarita Kudlov gave the presentation on the topic of Navigating Senior Living.  As background, by 2030 20% of the US Population will be 65 or older.  Over 70% of that aging population will require long-term care.
There are 4 options for senior care - Independent Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care and Board & Care.

Independent Living costs between $5,000 and $10,000 a month.  The pros are a high degree of independence; the cons are limited on-site medical care.

Assisted Living costs between $7,000 and $15,000 a month.  The pros are that it provides on-site professional support.  The cons are that it may not be a good option for those seeking 1-1 care.

Memory Care costs between $10,000 and $16,000 a month.  the pros are a secure and closely monitored environment.  The cons are the higher cost.

Board & Care costs between $7,000 and $12,000 a month.  The pros are a warm and intimate environment.  The cons are that it offers fewer amenities and services compared to larger communities.

Rotary thanks Margarita for a compelling and engaging presentation.
