Colonel Alden Cunningham appropriately lead us in the pledge. Paul Watermulder delivered a rousing message that skillfully wove the spirit Rotary giving; our club’s project school in rural India; and our local community contributions into one singular message of hope. It’s almost as if he’s done this kind of thing before.
New guests were introduced, including Fremont visiting Rotarian Henry Yin who brought along Carl Zhung, Alden’s neighbor Bruno Aziza, Jennifer’s guest, Kian Jessup.
Announcements:
Jennifer Pence announced the upcoming joint Rotary/Chamber mixer at the Community Center.
She also reported that 10+ Rotarians volunteered on April 10th and on April 17th will go back to Burlingame High School while conducting mock interviews with Seniors to sharpen their important life skills. The teacher and kids really value this commitment!
Al Royce shared a recent Town of Hillsborough proclamation to recognize our club’s recent formal change to now include the Town of Hillsborough in our club’s title. It’s crystal clear that our wonderful friends from Hillsborough embody all the very best attributes of the Rotary spirit and fellowship. I’m so happy that we’re now the Rotary Club of Burlingame & Hillsborough…Hey, it only took us 100 years to figure out the obvious!

Board of Supervisors President, Dave Canepa, Delivers the State of the County
Past Mayor and current City Council Member Michael Brownrigg introduced our esteemed guest, Board of Supervisors President, Dave Canepa. Michael provided a snapshot of our County’s extreme wealth and yet urgent housing and social service’s needs. He noted that the County’s population has shrunk by 40,000 during the past few years because of the economic squeeze play that affects our most vulnerable neighbors and friends. As usual, he nailed it.
Anticipating our questions and choosing his words ever-so-carefully, President Canepa described the current situation involving the SMC Sheriff. Be assured the formal due process review will be conducted in a fair and transparent way during the few months.
As a fourth generation San Mateo County resident and former Mayor of Daly City, President Canepa described his intense motivation to serve our community during his 16-year journey as a community leader. Along the way he’s served on the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and several other important regional boards. He also spoke about:
The County’s 169th Anniversary celebration on May 15th at 5pm at the County’s Historical Museum in Redwood City. Should be a banger!
The brand new 500 County Center building which houses the Board of Supervisor’s Offices and Chambers, the County Executive’s senior management operations and other key County services. In the spirit of our impending Earth Day, we should all be incredibly proud that this is the greenest municipal building in America. I sure am!
Measure K provides $145 million in critical funding for numerous quality-of-life programs and initiatives that enhance the lives of many folks with an emphasis on low-income housing, childcare and family services. It’s a great feeling knowing that those who need it most can find strong support with these programs. Sounds very Rotary-like to me.
President Canepa concluded his remarks by deftly addressing many questions posed by our intellectually curious crew. The man’s a proven winner! A job well done President Canepa.
