Prohibition in San Mateo County

During Prohibition, San Mateo County gained a reputation as one of California's "wettest" counties. Rumrunners landed Canadian whiskey on secluded beaches, moonshiners worked out of ordinary homes, and speakeasies flourished throughout the Peninsula. Mobster Sam Termini called it the most corrupt county in the state.

Join local historian Carmen Blair as she uncorks the colorful stories behind the county's Prohibition era, drawn from her research for the San Mateo County History Museum's exhibit Broads, Bootleggers and Bookies. And unlike the 1920s, we'll be serving alcohol legally at this meeting.
