Pledge and Invocation

President Stan called the meeting to order at 12:15 and welcomed us to the beautiful Poplar Creek Golf Course for our first meeting of the year on our new day, Wednesday.  Although the golfers were out in good number due to the clear weather, parking was plentiful.  Color us happy.

The pledge was led by Bob Doerr and Joe Comaroto delivered an inspiring invocation.  Peter kindly inquired if he could be heard without a microphone.  President Stan assured, “I can hear you and I’m half deaf.”  We hear that!
Peter urged prayers for our Rotary Club, our families and friends, and the Presidential transition of power.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests of the Club

Nary a one (visiting rotarians)

Attendance was good and there were lots of interesting guests as well.  Cheryl Fama introduced her guest Nancy Bush, Senior Vice President, Relationship Banking at United American Bank, San Mateo. Paul Watermulder introduced Don Bartels of Bartels Law Group, Burlingame.  Don is an IP (intellectual property) attorney in San Mateo. Lage Andersen pointed out that Don Bartels participates in many of Carr McClellan’s IP cases.  Peter Comaroto introduced Robert S. Gold, Financial Advisor, Summit Brokerage Services,   San Mateo.  Jennifer Pence introduced Chino Baluyut, principal and founder of The Sentence Center, Burlingame.  Doug Winnett introduced his wife, Catherine Winnett of Risk Strategies.  Emily Matthews introduced husband Tim Matthews, our speaker for the day.

Fritz Brauner, one of the fun two on the Fun Committee with Sean Williams, promised more fun and frolic in 2017.  Tacos at the Yacht Club was a winner, billiards at Steelhead was another.  There may be karaoke in our future.

Program

Emily’s Tim Matthews is the Vice President of Marketing of Imperva (Imperva.com and Incapsula.com).  Tim visited us some time ago to discuss his book “The Professional Marketer,”  available through Amazon, com.  Today, it was all about BOTS.  Yes, “bots” jumped out from the word “robots,” but these are itty bitty goobers that infiltrate everything: the computer, your phone, your purse.
The word “robot” was coined in 1923, translated from “robata,” meaning forced servitude.  Robots do basically what we can’t do or don’t want to do. To wit:  we don’t want to read, index, and categorize the 30 trillion pages Google maintains.  Google trains bots for that work. Bot activities:  Site scrapes, Comment Spam, SEO Spam, Fraud.

The cyber world consists of 51.8% humans, 22.9% good bots, 25.3% bad bots.  Criminals are very much into bots.  A botnet is a group of bots.  There is something called a bot herder.  Can rent botnet for installs,  there is an anger-management bot.

Lucky for you, that nice Tim Matthews is sharing his power point.  It will be emailed to you concurrently with the High Gear.  More information: sitelock.com, incapsula.com.
